My uncle said to always pre-heat the sand for a core box with a torch, even in summer.

Tried it on a humid day last week and the cores came out perfect, no crumbling. Anyone else use this trick for high-humidity pours?

Wait you actually torched the sand in the box? That sounds like a fire hazard waiting to happen.

Just keep a fire extinguisher nearby and don't use accelerants.

And a fire extinguisher is a good idea but you really need to check the sand first. If it has any moisture in it at all, that steam can pop and send hot sand flying everywhere. We always let our sand sit out for a day after rinsing it, and even then we do a small test torch before committing to the full pour. Also, make sure your core box is metal, not wood or plastic, or you'll end up with a melted mess like that guy's friend did.

My buddy's shop tried it once and the whole core box warped from the heat.
