Honestly, my whole invoicing system crashed right before tax season and I lost two days of work

Man that's rough, but you didn't actually lose the work itself, right? The data is probably still there even if the system crashed. The two days is the time to recover it or rebuild the system. It's a huge pain, but the invoices and numbers exist somewhere. You might need a tech person to pull the data from a backup or the old hard drive. It's more about fixing the access than the work being gone forever.

Ugh, I had to do that last month and it sucked.

My buddy's computer died and he thought everything was gone. Turns out the repair shop just pulled the files off the old drive in like an hour.

Dude that sucks. I've been there with tech issues right before big deadlines. I was reading somewhere that most data loss stuff is actually recoverable if you stop using the drive right away. The more you mess with it, the more you risk writing over the old files. Two days of lost time is brutal, but at least the work itself should be salvageable from the backup or the old drive. Hopefully you can get a tech guy to pop that drive in an external enclosure or something to grab the data. It's still a huge hassle but not a total loss.
