Warning: I saw a tax prep place in Phoenix offering 'freelancer packages' that looked like a total scam

I was getting coffee last week and walked past a storefront tax office with a big sign for 'Independent Contractor Specials'. They had a package for $299 that promised to 'maximize your deductions'. I looked at their flyer and it listed things like 'home office optimization' and 'vehicle write-off help', but the fine print said it only covered filing a basic Schedule C. No talk of quarterly payments, retirement plans, or separating business and personal funds. It felt like they were just repackaging normal tax prep with fancy words to charge freelancers more. Has anyone in Arizona actually used a service like this and gotten real value, or is it better to just find a CPA who knows self-employment?

Home office optimization" sounds like the fancy term I'd use to avoid admitting I just work from my couch.

That "home office optimization" sounds like they just plug numbers into software you could use yourself.

My company paid for one of those last year. It was basically a checklist of things I already knew, like getting a better chair.
