Unpopular opinion: I quit tracking my time by the hour

I always thought I needed a fancy app to track every 15 minutes I worked. It just made me feel like I was on a clock all day. Last month, I started working in blocks with my main goal being the project, not the time. I'm finishing work earlier and, funny enough, billing more now.

You mentioned billing more now by focusing on projects instead of time. That shift probably lets you tap into how you naturally work best without clock pressure. Getting rid of minute by minute tracking cuts out a lot of pointless busywork and mental noise. Clients care more about what you finish than how long you sat there, so billing for the project makes sense. It turns work from counting hours to making real progress.

Switching to project billing really cuts the clutter. No more ticking minutes, just getting stuff done. It's how work should be.

But do clients ever push back on scope with fixed project rates?

Why do we act like prisoners to the clock anyway? Tracking every minute is like trying to control every little thing. Like @the_dakota said, dropping the timer just lets you get stuff done. I used to waste more time logging hours than doing actual work.
