Update: Talked to my dad about my freelance rates and he said something that stuck with me
He asked me what I charged per project now, and I told him about $500. He just nodded and said, "Back in '92, I charged a local print shop $200 for a logo... that was my rent for the month." It made me think about how the whole value of our work has shifted, not just the numbers. Anyone else have an older freelancer in their life who dropped a truth bomb like that?

Wow, that's the thing about money now, it just doesn't stretch the same way. My grandma talks about buying a week's groceries for what I spend on coffee. It really shows how the cost of living has gotten away from what people get paid.

Truth bomb" is a bit much. It's just a dad telling a story. The value of work changes with the times, that's normal. Not every old story has some deep meaning we need to overthink. It was just his rent back then.

Yeah, and that's the whole point. We hear these stories and just shrug, like it's a history lesson. But it's not. It's the reason my nephew can't even think about moving out. The math doesn't work anymore, and we all just accept it as normal. That disconnect between then and now is the real story, not just the rent number.
