Managed to film my nephew's first steps without crying myself
Balancing the camera and my emotions was tougher than any client job.

That bit about balancing the camera and your emotions, I totally get it. But filming a first step without crying? No way I could keep it together, that's the whole point.

My cousin tried to film her kid's first step last year. The camera work is a disaster. You just see the carpet, then the ceiling, then a blurry wall because she was full on sobbing. The audio is just her going "oh my god" over a bunch of sniffling.

Remember trying to film my niece blowing out her first birthday candle. Had the phone ready, everything. Right as she takes a breath, her older brother leaps in and blows it out for her. The video is just me yelling "Danny, no!" and a close up of my own thumb covering the lens. Still have it saved somewhere. The messed up footage is funnier than a perfect shot would have been.

Honestly, the shaky camera just proves it's real. If you're not crying, you're not paying attention to the moment. Save the perfect shots for later, let the first steps be messy.
