My worst week ever started with a client who said 'just film everything' for their 3-day conference.
They gave zero shot list, changed the schedule hourly, and then complained the final edit 'lacked focus'. It cost me a $2,500 referral when they bad-mouthed me to their network. How do you guys lock down a clear plan with clients who think they want documentary-style coverage?

That "just film everything" line is a trap. Heard it before. They never actually want everything, they want magic. Had a guy once tell me that, then got mad I didn't read his mind about which boring handshake was the "important" one. Mileslane is right, you gotta make them pick the five key things first. No list, no shoot. Saves everyone the headache.

Wait they cost you a referral over that? That's insane. @mileslane is totally right about the five key things rule.

Just film everything" is the most expensive sentence in our business. I've learned the hard way that clients who say that actually mean "read my mind and make it look like a movie I saw once." Now I make them sit down and pick five must-have shots before I even pack a bag. If they can't do that, they're not ready to hire anyone.
