My hand cramp during a delicate stain job was a wake-up call

I was working on this antique chair and my fingers totally LOCKED up halfway through. It hit me that I’ve been ignoring basic hand health for years. Now I do these quick stretches from a carpenter friend before any fine work. The difference in my steadiness with a detail brush is HUGE. Finishing feels smoother and I’m not dreading long projects anymore.

Mike laughed at stretches. I did too, until now.

Seriously @benn32, it hits different when your own body calls you out. Most people skip stuff like stretches because they're chasing the quick win, the heavy lift or the fast mile. They think it's not "real" work, so they laugh it off as pointless. But that baseline mobility is what lets you keep doing the advanced things without breaking down. It's the classic mistake of skipping the boring fundamentals to get to the cool stuff, only to have the fundamentals fail you later.

Totally agree with @wells.christopher on the fundamentals. I do wrist circles and finger pulls before fine work. Takes two minutes but stops cramps dead. My brush hand is so much steadier now, it's like night and day.
