Rant: A client's oak table in Phoenix bled tannins through my first shellac coat like crazy.

Honestly, I was in their kitchen last Thursday, and after the first coat dried, these ugly brown spots appeared, so I had to seal it with a 2lb cut of dewaxed shellac before moving to the topcoat, has anyone else had this happen with a really fresh piece of wood?

Did you sand it back after that first coat before sealing? I always hit it with 220 to knock down any raised grain before laying down the dewaxed shellac. Also, try letting the wood acclimate for a few days in a dry room before you even start, that helps a ton with the tannin migration in Phoenix especially.

Wait, that was just the first coat?

Remember to seal the grain filler too or it'll ghost through.

Ugh, fresh oak is the worst for that. Tannin bleed can ruin your whole day, right? Good call hitting it with that dewaxed shellac first.
