Showerthought: The 'distressed' look on furniture has gotten way more subtle in the last five years.

I just refinished a 1920s oak dresser from my grandma's attic, and compared to a piece I did in 2019, the goal now is to mimic natural wear, not create obvious, uniform scratches. What's the most convincing aging technique you've found lately?

Try rubbing stain off high spots with a paper towel.

My usual method just smears it around (I'm not great at this).

The old t-shirt trick works for me, just dab don't rub.
