My sleep tracker insisted I was awake during a thunderstorm nap
I was checking out a new sleep tracker for a review. It promised to track sleep stages very well. On Monday, it said I was awake for four hours during a thunderstorm nap. I definitely slept through that because I only woke up when my cat jumped on me. Tuesday, it recorded me as in light sleep while I was making coffee. I had it on my wrist the whole time. Now my sleep log looks like I nap at random times all day. I guess the gadget thinks I'm part cat, not sure if that's a feature or a bug.
Mine once logged a full REM cycle while I was just nodding off during a film... I guess my tracker thinks my most intense dreams are about spreadsheets and team meetings. At this point, I trust my cat's judgment on my sleep more than the gadget.
My fitness tracker does stuff like that all the time. It logged a thirty minute bike ride once when I was just vigorously stirring a giant pot of soup. Another time it said I climbed twelve flights of stairs while I was drumming my fingers on my desk waiting for a file to download. The data gets pretty useless when it mixes up basic movement with actual exercise.
Try resetting the calibration on your device, as the sensors can get confused by repetitive motion. It's the same reason @simonk98 got credit for mountain biking while cooking, these gadgets aren't that smart. A fresh start usually helps it tell the difference between a nap and making coffee.
