My uncle showed me a piece of obsidian he found near Mount St. Helens

He said, 'This rock is frozen lightning,' and explained how the volcano's heat made it glass. It felt so smooth and sharp at the same time. Has anyone else found volcanic glass around there?

Your uncle's description is actually pretty spot on for how obsidian forms.

Actually, that's a cool story but I have to disagree a bit. Obsidian isn't really "frozen lightning." That's fulgurite, which is glass made from lightning hitting sand. Obsidian is just volcanic glass that cooled super fast. Still a really neat find though.

Found a piece of fulgurite once and it looked like a tiny lightning bolt.
