Trying to get a clean break on that basalt sample from the Columbia River Gorge
Thought it would take an afternoon, but between the wrong chisel and the hidden fracture plane, it was a solid three weeks before I got the slab I wanted, anyone have a better method for columnar jointing?

What kind of chisel were you using? A standard masonry one can just wedge into those micro-fractures and ruin everything. A proper geological pick with a sharper angle might have saved you some grief.

Actually used a proper geologist's pick the whole time.

Yeah, because we all just have a geologist's pick lying around next to the duct tape and the spare light bulbs. Must be nice to have the perfect tool right out of the gate while the rest of us make do and learn the hard way. I guess some folks just start with a full toolbox and skip the whole "wasting a weekend" part of the hobby. Real relatable.
