Color rods cracking on me until I changed my heat method

My pieces kept splitting when I added color, so I tried warming the rods in the back of the flame first. It fixed the problem, but a friend says that extra step can make the color muddy. I'm torn between a clean join and keeping colors bright. What's your go-to way to add color without cracks?

At a studio demo, the artist used a propane torch on low for pre-heating. It fixed cracks without dulling the colors, lol.

Ever try it on clay?

That propane torch trick is interesting. How close does she hold the rod to the flame, and for how long? I've tried a candle before but it left soot. If the torch is on low, does it just take the chill off, or do you actually see the glass start to glow a little? Trying to picture the exact step before moving it into the main flame.

Is your friend speaking from experience or just guessing? I warm my rods in the kiln for a minute before starting, and it NEVER muddies the colors. That extra step is CRUCIAL for avoiding cracks. My colors stay bright because I don't overheat them, just get them even. Honestly, a consistent heat is KEY for clean joins and vibrant color.
