Can we talk about the way we handle old putty on wood sashes?

I was stripping a 1920s window in Cincinnati last month and realized I've been using a heat gun way too close for years, which was baking the wood underneath. The old foreman on the job pointed out the scorch marks I'd made and just said 'slow down, kid'. What's your go-to method for getting that rock-hard glazing out without damaging the frame?

Oh, I learned that lesson the hard way too. I used to think a heat gun was the only way to get that old stuff out. Now I keep the heat moving and much farther back, and I follow up with a good, sharp putty knife. Patience really is the key, just like your foreman said. It takes longer, but you don't end up with those cooked spots in the wood.
