I swear my car's cup holder moved an inch to the left overnight

For three years, I'd toss my coffee into the same exact spot on my drive to work, no looking needed. Then last Tuesday, I went to put it down and my travel mug just thudded against the console. I measured it with a tape from the gear shift, and the center of the cup holder is now a solid inch further left than it was. My wife thinks I'm nuts, but I know that spot like the back of my hand. Has anyone else had something in their house or car just shift position for no reason?

Okay but hear me out, what if your wife is right and you are just nuts. You said you know that spot like the back of your hand, but hands change over time too. Maybe your morning routine was off, or you were more tired than usual. Our brains fill in gaps all the time, and after three years of muscle memory, a single weird reach could make you question everything. It's way more likely you just missed the mark once than your car secretly rebuilt itself overnight.

My 2008 Civic has had the same loose cup holder for a decade, it rattles around if you hit a bump hard. Could something have jiggled it out of its normal spot? I just shove mine back into place when it feels off.

Read a forum post once where someone said the plastic clips on those Civic cup holders get worn down over time. @paige166, your shoving method might be the only real fix since the parts are probably just too loose to stay put anymore. Could try wedging a thin piece of rubber in the gap to stop the rattle, but it's a common issue with that model year.
