Had a real eye-opener at the Tulsa gun show last weekend

I was looking at a sporterized 1903 Springfield a guy wanted me to fix. He'd tried to drill and tap it himself for a scope mount. The holes were off by a solid 3/16 of an inch, and he'd started to strip the threads. I told him it was a $200 job to weld, redrill, and retap it right. He just shrugged and said he'd find someone cheaper. Anyone else run into this kind of thing where the customer just doesn't get the cost of fixing a bad DIY job?

Ever think they're just too proud to admit they messed up?

Watched a buddy try to save money on a similar repair, ended up costing him double to fix the new mess.

That reminds me of my neighbor who tried to fix his own deck. He was so sure he could do it cheaper, but the wood was all wrong and he didn't seal it right. The whole thing rotted in a year. Had to pay a crew to tear it out and start over, which was way more than a pro would have cost the first time. Sometimes you just have to know when a job is too big.
