So I accidentally painted my hard hat pink with leftover spray paint. Now the whole crew calls me Pinky, but it's actually easier to spot on site.

My uncle worked highway construction for thirty years. He told me they used to mark the new guy's hard hat with a bright stripe just for visibility. Your pink hat is doing the same job, just with more style. The nickname might stick, but it beats being the guy nobody can see in a busy work zone. Safety first, even if it comes in a funny color.

Ever hear about the old practice of giving new guys a white hard hat? It was like a target for all the pranks until it got dirty enough to blend in.

Yeah, jakel25 is right about that white hat being a target. I heard some crews would even "accidentally" drop a bit of grease or paint near the new guy's station on day one, just to speed up the process. It was less about the pranks and more about a quick, silent test to see if they could take the mess without losing their cool. Once the hat looked lived-in, you were part of the crew.
