My uncle's weird take on the Roanoke Colony got me digging

We were at a family cookout in Raleigh and he said the whole 'Lost Colony' thing was just a cover story for them moving in with the Croatan tribe. He pointed out how the word 'Croatoan' was carved on a post, not as a distress signal, but as a forwarding address. I'd always heard the spooky vanish story, but his idea that they just integrated makes a lot of sense. Has anyone else found a simple explanation for a famous mystery that just clicked?

My cousin had a whole thing about the Bermuda Triangle being mostly bad weather and sloppy record keeping. He showed me this old map where half the "mysterious" disappearances were just outside the usual shipping lanes. Kinda ruined the magic but it made way more sense than aliens or time warps. Sometimes the boring answer is the right one.

Your uncle's theory is way better than the ghost story version. Makes you wonder how many other mysteries are just people changing their mailing address.
