Game night turned into a crypto vs. baseball cards debate

Last Friday, during a casual game night, a buddy brought up his new crypto investment. He equated it to his childhood baseball card hobby, saying both are about holding and hoping. I had to jump in and talk about blockchains versus cardboard, which got everyone listening. It was a fun but unexpected way to discuss beginner investing concepts.

I saw a CNBC article about that Beeple digital art sale. It argued digital scarcity mimics rare card markets but with way faster price swings. The tech changes but human psychology around collecting stays pretty much the same.

Showing my old cards made the digital stuff click.

My 1998 Pokemon binder sat in my attic for years. Pulling those cards out made the whole NFT thing CLICK for me. You need to touch the old stuff to get why the new stuff matters. The speed is crazy now, but that core feeling of finding something special? That NEVER changes. Start with a real card in your hand before you dive into OpenSea.

But do you think the speed changes how we feel about owning stuff? Scrolling OpenSea for an NFT just isn't the same as slowly flipping through a binder of cards. The rush to buy and sell is instant now. You could own a Bored Ape for five minutes, where a Mickey Mantle card sat in your closet for years. The fun might be in the chase, not the keeping.
