My brother's quiet struggle made me rethink how we talk at home

I used to think family fights were just normal noise. Seeing him shut down showed me the real hurt it causes. Now I try to check in before things blow up.

Wait, you never noticed he was shutting down before? That's wild to me. I always saw my sister pulling away during fights.

Imagine not even hearing a chair scrape back from the table. That means the fights were so loud they drowned out everything. You really have to think about the environment that creates.

Our dinner table got so loud we missed his quiet exits, @ninasanchez.

Wow, zero sound clues? How did you not hear a chair or anything? That's crazy.

Chaos just drowns out everything else.

Sometimes the yelling gets so loud you miss other sounds. In my house, the TV would be on full volume or doors were banging. You just don't hear chairs moving when everything is that crazy. Your brain blocks out the small stuff.
