I totally botched mouse trap placement and here's what fixed it
I put snap traps along the garage walls thinking mice stick to edges. For weeks, nothing got caught. I saw droppings in the middle of the floor one morning. So I moved traps to the center and caught mice right away. Now I always look for fresh signs before setting traps.

Well duh, those mice clearly wanted an open floor plan even I hate traffic.

Robin's basement mice avoided the center due to instinct, not design taste.

Read that mice actually avoid open areas when given the choice.

Remember my friend who had mice in her basement? She put traps in the corners but left the whole middle of the room empty, thinking they'd run across. Not a single one got caught out in the open. They just stuck to the edges along the walls and behind boxes. It totally fits with them avoiding open spaces, like they need to feel a wall on their back or something. She had to move all the traps right up against the baseboards before she caught any.
