Rant: My brothers and I are stuck on what to do with our parents' old place
My dad passed last year and left the house to all three of us kids. One brother wants to sell it fast for cash, another wants to fix it up and rent it out, and I'm stuck in the middle. We keep fighting over small stuff like who pays for a new roof or if we should just hire a realtor now. It's putting a huge strain on us and nobody will budge. Has anyone else dealt with inheriting property with siblings? I need some tips on how to handle this without our family falling apart. We really need a plan that works for everyone but I have no idea where to start.

You mentioned fighting over small stuff like the roof and realtor. I read an article about siblings inheriting property, and it made a good point. It said that without a shared goal, every small cost will feel like a battle. So maybe you three should meet just to talk about what your dad would have hoped for with the house. Once you pick a clear path together, the smaller choices become easier to handle. Bringing in someone trusted to help you talk might keep things calm and fair. I hope you find a way to work this out without more hurt feelings.

I always figured dividing things was mostly about the cash and rules. Your idea of finding a shared goal first actually makes sense, since it turns fights into teamwork. So yeah, starting with what dad wanted could really smooth things over.

That "shared goal" bit reminds me of my friend's cousin. They were ready to sell their grandma's place until someone said she'd hoped it would stay in the family. Ended up fixing it up together, sort of.
