Showerthought: AI voice cloning made me stop trusting phone calls from my own brother
Honestly, my brother called me last Thursday crying about an emergency, said he wrecked his truck and needed $2k for a tow. Sounded exactly like him, same pauses and everything. I almost sent the money until I called his wife and he was sitting right there watching TV. Now I have a family code word we use on any important call. Has anyone else dealt with that creepy moment where you couldn't tell real from fake?

Actually the $2k number is what would have made me question it more, not less. I mean if my brother was in a real emergency he'd probably just say "I need money" without having a random exact figure ready. Maybe it's just me but that level of detail sounds like someone who practiced their lie too much.

The $2k detail is what gets me, that's so specific it would have fooled me too.

Hate to be that guy but it was actually $2,400, not $2k. Small difference but the extra four hundred is what made me double take.
