That one time a junior analyst caught my spreadsheet error in under 5 minutes
I was checking a quarterly report at my desk last fall, and a new hire from the analytics team walked by. She asked if she could look at my formula for the depreciation column and quickly pointed out I had a cell reference locked wrong. That tiny mistake would have thrown off the whole budget by about $12,000. Has anyone else had a moment where someone with less experience saw something you missed?

My spreadsheet game is so weak even the office cat could probably catch my errors, lmao.

You ever tried conditional formatting @charlies37? It sounds fancy but it's literally just making cells change color when something's off. Way easier than staring at numbers forever. Set it to highlight any row where the total doesn't match what you're expecting, and you'll catch dumb mistakes before the cat gets a chance to judge you. Took me about 15 minutes to learn on YouTube one lunch break. That and a simple =IFERROR check on your formulas will save you from most of the facepalm moments.

Did you catch that article on Lifehacker about spreadsheet errors from like last month? They ran a study and found that nearly 90% of spreadsheets have mistakes in them, which honestly made me feel a LOT better about my own terrible formulas. The crazy part is most of those errors are just simple typos or copy-paste fails, not even hard math stuff. So don't beat yourself up too hard because the cat probably makes the same kind of slip ups on Excel, honestly. What helped me was just slowing down and checking one row at a time after I finish, almost like a proofreading step. Condition formatting sounds smart too though, I might try that YouTube video wright.leo mentioned next time I'm stuck.
