I finally swapped frozen chicken nuggets for homemade breaded tenders in the air fryer

Used to just toss a bag of frozen nuggets in there for 10 minutes, but after reading a post here last month about coating your own with panko and seasoning, I tried it with some $3 chicken breasts from Aldi and the texture difference is unreal, anyone else find it hard to go back to store-bought stuff?

The texture difference is unreal" - that's exactly what got me too. Once you do it yourself with fresh chicken and real panko, those bagged nuggets just taste like salty cardboard in comparison... I've even started double-coating mine with a little flour first then egg then panko, and it gives them this amazing crunch that holds up way better in the air fryer. Also, you can control the salt and seasonings, which is huge if you're watching your sodium or just want more flavor than what comes in the bag. The prep time is a bit more, but I'll throw together a big batch on Sunday and freeze the extras on a baking sheet, then toss them in a zip bag for quick dinners during the week. Honestly, it's one of those swaps that feels like cheating because it's so easy but tastes like you actually tried.

Double coating is a GAME CHANGER. I started doing flour, egg, then panko with a little parmesan mixed in and it makes the crust so much better. Even my kids notice when I use the homemade ones versus the bagged ones now. Freezing them on a sheet tray is the best trick too, I do the same thing with chicken patties for sandwiches.

@tessa_carr that parmesan tip is genius, I gotta try that. One thing nobody's mentioned yet is the chicken itself - I've been using thighs instead of breasts and it's a total game changer. They stay way juicier inside while the crust gets just as crispy, especially if you pound them flat first so they cook even. Plus thighs are usually cheaper per pound, so you save a few bucks without losing any of that homemade crunch vs the bagged stuff.
