Why does everyone preheat their air fryer for 5 minutes?

I watched my neighbor set hers for 5 minutes every single time and then burn a batch of chicken wings in 12, so I tested my own at 2 minutes versus 5 with fries from Aldi. Maybe it's just my unit, but the preheat window made zero difference in crispness. Anyone else skip preheating entirely and see no issue?

Preheating is just a waste of time with most foods. Straight in, flip once, done.

Pretty sure the whole preheat thing is just one of those food rules we all follow without asking why, like letting meat sit on the counter before cooking it. My grandma used to do the same stuff with her old oven, and I bet air fryer companies just kept it as a habit to make people feel like they were getting a more "professional" result. The only time I've seen it actually matter is with something really thick, like a big frozen chicken breast straight from the freezer, but even then it's maybe 2 minutes at most. Honestly the bigger pattern I notice is people overcomplicating every little step in the kitchen and then getting mad at the gadget instead of just trusting their eyes. If the fries look done, they're done, no need to wait on a timer that doesn't know your specific machine.
