Spent 8 hours chasing a phantom hydraulic leak on a Cessna 172
We had a report of a slow drip from the right main gear. Pulled the wheel, cleaned everything, pressure tested the line. No leak. Put it all back together, leak was still there. Finally found a tiny crack in the reservoir cap vent line, it was weeping down and dripping off the gear leg. Has anyone else had a leak that was actually from a component way above the wet spot?

Been there. Had a Mooney once with a leak that looked like it was coming from the brake line. Pulled everything apart cleaned it all up nothing. Turned out the fuel selector O-ring was weeping fuel that ran down the firewall and dripped off the gear weld. Hydraulic fluid and oil do the same thing. Gravity makes you a dumb mechanic if you only look at the wet spot. Always trace the path up. A little seep from a high point can look like a flood low down.
