Torque wrench calibration check finally clicked for me after 14 years

I used to just trust my torque wrenches year after year, never thinking about drift. Then last month I did a calibration check with a cheap beam style wrench I had in the back of my box, and my digital unit was off by 12 ft-lbs at the 80 ft-lb mark. That's way past spec for anything we do on airframes. Now I check every wrench every 6 months with a simple adapter setup and a fish scale from the hardware store, costs me maybe $30 total. I also started dating each wrench with paint pen after every check, because I kept losing track of which ones were done. Has anyone else had a close call with an out of spec wrench, or do you just send them out to a shop every year?
