Unpopular opinion: I stopped using safety wire on oil filters after 12 years
I always figured safety wire on spin-on oil filters was just how it's done, but last month a retired A&P at a shop in Wichita showed me the torque spec sheet for a Lycoming O-360 and it turns out most of those filters have a lock mechanism that makes the wire pointless. I tested it on three planes during annuals and none of them budged after 50 hours. Now I'm wondering if I've just been adding 20 minutes of swearing to every oil change for no reason. Anyone else ditch the wire or am I about to get yelled at by the next IA?
