My cat video got 10 views. My neighbor's cat video blew up.
Posted a clip of my cat knocking over a plant last Tuesday. Same day, my neighbor uploaded her cat doing basically the same thing. Hers got 50k likes in 3 hours. Mine is still at 10. The only difference? She used a trending sound from a popular reel. It feels totally random. How much does the initial audio clip choice actually decide what goes viral?

Read an article once that said the algorithm really does push videos using trending audio, at least at first. It gives them a bigger starting pool of people to show it to. Your content can be identical, but that initial boost from a popular sound is huge. Honestly, it feels less about quality and more about hitting those early signals for the platform.

Seriously, that makes so much sense and it's kinda frustrating. So is the whole game now just chasing whatever sound is hot this week? Like @marybutler said about the dog video, it feels like a cheap trick that works. I wonder if that starting pool is the only real boost, or if using the sound keeps helping the video forever. Honestly it makes me not even want to try making anything original.
