Showerthought: I tested auto captions vs typing my own on a 40 second clip and the numbers were not close
Posted the same video twice on my page, one with the auto captions and one where I typed them myself, and the typed one got 3x the watch time. The auto version kept garbling my intro so people bailed in the first 5 seconds, and the app still counts that early drop as a real view. Has anyone else noticed the algorithm seems to favor clips people actually finish, or is it just me?
I used to blow off the idea that captions mattered that much, figured the app just pushes whatever gets clicks. Then I watched my own stuff die in the first few seconds and checked the retention graph, and yeah, the drop was right where the auto captions butchered a word. Typed ones kept people past that hump and the finish rate went up, which seemed to be what the app rewarded. Now I burn the extra ten minutes and type them out myself every time.
