Talking to a TikTok trend forecaster made me realize the algorithm is just predicting what we already want

I was at a coffee shop in Brooklyn last week and this guy next to me was a TikTok trends researcher. He told me the algorithm doesn't actually create trends, it just surfaces them 3-4 days before they go mainstream. He showed me how a specific dance clip got 200k views then suddenly exploded to 2 million after the algorithm tweaked its boost threshold. It hit different because I always thought the platform was pushing stuff on us, but really it's just watching what we already gravitate toward and amplifying it. Made me wonder how much of virality is actually engineered vs just timing. Has anyone else had a conversation that totally flipped how you see recommendation systems?

Honestly that whole "paying for a boost before it takes off naturally" thing makes me think of indie bands who buy fake ticket sales to get on Spotify playlists. The algorithm just amplifies whatever momentum is already there, even if that momentum was bought.

The "overnight sensation" thing is actually the part I'd push back on a little. A lot of those blow ups are engineered by people who know exactly when to pay for a boost or get on a trending sound before it pops. I've seen creators admit they spend hundreds on promotion before a video ever takes off naturally. The algorithm might surface what we like, but there's still a lot of money and strategy behind making something look like an accident.

That coffee shop conversation must have felt like seeing behind the curtain. It's wild to realize the algorithm is basically a really good pattern matcher for human behavior rather than some puppet master. Makes you wonder how many "overnight sensations" were actually just perfectly timed with a boost.
