Can we talk about how people keep calling 'Attack on Titan' a shonen?

I keep seeing this in forum threads and even on some big YouTube channels, but the series ran in a seinen magazine for its entire run after the first few chapters. This matters because it frames the whole discussion about its themes and target audience wrong. Has anyone else noticed this mistake getting more common lately?

Saw a video essay last week that called it the "darkest shonen ever" and it just made me sigh. The magazine it was in, Bessatsu Shonen Magazine, is technically seinen by the demographics they aim for. That label changes how you look at the whole story, like the politics and the heavier violence. People just hear "shonen" and run with it without checking.

But does the label really change the story itself?

My friend argued for an hour that Watchmen was a superhero comic. The original label was in a magazine for adults, which explains the darker tone. Getting the category wrong can totally miss the point of the work.

So why does this mix-up keep happening, @mason_reed47?
