Changed my mind about subs vs dubs after a bad week in June

I always swore by dubbed anime, but last June I had a terrible week where my internet went out for 3 days straight. I had to watch some older series on DVD from my local library, and the only option was subbed for a show called 'Monster.' I got so into the story that I forgot I was even reading, and now I actually prefer subs for anything serious. Anyone else have a moment where they switched sides?

Did your internet just break or did it feel like a sign from the anime gods? Mine was when a friend forced me to watch the original Gundam.

Blame your friend for that rabbit hole. Gundam is basically the gateway drug for mecha nerds everywhere. Now you're probably three series deep and wondering where your weekend went.

That's funny you mention the forced watch thing, because I actually think there's a real difference between being told to watch something and stumbling into it blind. Like, with Fullmetal Alchemist, the whole homunculus reveal hits way different if you don't know it's coming. My buddy tried to get me into Evangelion for years and I resisted. Then one night I accidentally watched the first three episodes in the wrong order on some streaming site and I was so confused I had to start over properly. Now it's my favorite. Your mileage may vary but I think the accidental discovery makes the story stick better.

Three days without internet sounds rough but at least you got Monster out of it. I had a similar thing happen when my little brother lent me his laptop with Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood downloaded and I had no choice but to read the subs. Never looked back after that.
