Dubbed vs subbed debate got me last night at 2am
I was watching Akira with my brother. He swore the English dub was better. I always said subs are the only way. But then we watched the new dub from 2021 and something clicked. The lip flaps actually matched and the voice acting had real emotion. Now I'm confused. Do you guys stick with one or switch based on the show?

The 2021 Akira dub was like night and day compared to the old one. I remember reading that they brought in a whole new team of voice directors who actually studied the original Japanese performances instead of just winging it. Lip sync is the big one for me too, because when the mouths don't match it pulls me right out of the scene. I think a lot of older dubs from the 90s and early 2000s just had bad direction and rushed sessions, so they got a bad reputation that some of the newer ones don't deserve. Your mileage may vary, but I've started checking reviews for specific dubs before I write them off now.

Did you ever catch that one anime from the late 90s where the dub actors sounded like they were reading their lines off a bathroom wall and the lip sync was completely off? I swear it ruined the whole show for me but now I kinda miss the chaos lol.
