Overheard two people at the con arguing about spoiler culture in anime threads

I was at AnimeNYC last weekend and these guys near the food court were getting heated. One said, 'posting a spoiler in a general discussion thread is basically a war crime,' and the other argued that if an episode aired a week ago, it's fair game. It made me realize how different communities set their own rules. I always check a forum's pinned post for spoiler policies now before I jump into a chat. How does your usual anime group handle spoiler tags for new seasonal shows?

Just pin a clear spoiler policy, it saves everyone the headache.

Honestly that week old rule seems way too short for a lot of people. Life gets busy and not everyone can watch an episode the day it drops. My usual group uses spoiler tags for anything from the current season that hasn't been out for at least a month. It just feels like basic respect to give folks a chance to catch up without having major plot points ruined. Calling it a war crime is a bit much, but being careless with spoilers does ruin the fun for others.

Used to be in the "if it aired it's fair game" camp, especially for older shows. But then I got into One Piece late and had the Water 7 arc completely spoiled by some goofball in a thread about something totally unrelated, and man, that stung. Now I'm way more careful, I keep spoiler tags on new season stuff for at least a couple weeks even in general chats, because it takes zero effort to be decent about it.

Used to think a week was fine. Seeing someone get a big reveal ruined changed my mind completely.
