Rewatching FMA Brotherhood with subs after 3 years of dubs and the difference floored me
I spent years watching everything dubbed because I could half pay attention while doing other stuff, but I sat down with Brotherhood subtitled over the weekend and caught so many little jokes and voice tones that the dub just flattened out. The scene where Ed yells at Winry in Rush Valley hits way harder when you hear the original delivery. Does anyone else switch back and forth depending on the show, or do you just pick one and stick with it?
I read an interview with a voice actor once who said dubs have to fit the mouth flaps, so they end up cutting or squishing lines that don't fit. That stuck with me because it explains why some jokes just vanish in English. Subs let the translators keep the whole line, puns and all, even when it's clunky. I still do dubs for background shows and subs for anything I actually care about. Brotherhood is one where the sub is worth the full attention.
