Check both languages before you commit to a series. A bad translation crew can ruin any show regardless of which side you pick.

Wow, yeah that's so true. I had a buddy who started watching this big anime everyone was raving about, sounded amazing from the plot summaries he found. He watched the whole first season in English dub and hated it, thought the characters were flat and the jokes were dumb. Then a few months later he saw a clip of the same scene in the original Japanese with subs and realized it was completely different, way funnier and more emotional. He was so mad at himself for not checking both first because now he can't get that bad dub out of his head when he tries to rewatch it.

Four seasons in, and I'm still not convinced it matters that much. I mean, yeah, a bad translation can be rough, but I've watched some shows with terrible dubs and still enjoyed them fine because the story was good enough to carry it. My sister watched all of Dragon Ball Z in that awful 90s English dub where they changed half the script and added random swear words, and she still loves it to this day. The whole "ruined forever" thing seems kind of dramatic to me, like you're letting one bad experience sour you on a whole franchise when you could just... watch the other version and move on?
