Tbh, I spent 45 minutes trying to figure out which order to watch the Fate series
I kept finding different charts and timelines, and my friend finally just said 'start with Unlimited Blade Works'. Anyone have a simpler answer?

Oh man, your friend is right on the money. Starting with Unlimited Blade Works is the only way to go that doesn't make your head spin. Those charts are a trap... they try to include everything, even the weird alternate timelines. Just watch UBW, then the Heaven's Feel movies. After that, if you're still into it, you can check out the prequel, Fate/Zero. It makes way more sense that way.

The whole Fate watch order debate reminds me of trying to explain a complex family tree at a reunion. You start with one cousin and suddenly you're talking about second marriages and step kids from three different states. Like eva_moore said, keeping it simple works. I see this with video game lore too, where new players get a 50 page wiki instead of just playing the game. People feel like they need the full picture upfront, but sometimes you just need the main path to get going.

That family reunion comparison is perfect actually because it mirrors how we handle almost any hobby these days. I noticed it with my buddy trying to get into Warhammer 40k last month, he found this massive flowchart of every novel and codex and nearly quit before even buying a single miniature. Sometimes the gatekeeping isn't even intentional, people just love sharing everything they know all at once and it overwhelms newcomers. There is something really freeing about just jumping into the pool instead of reading the entire rulebook from the deck first.

Exactly, that's the path that worked for me too. It keeps things simple.
