The time a veteran subber told me to stop watching dubs entirely for a month

He said I'd never appreciate the original voice acting if I kept splitting my attention, so I gave it a shot with Death Note. Did a full switch actually change anyone else's preferences or am I just a convert now?

The first episode of Death Note subbed I felt lost without the dub voices. But by episode 10 I was hooked on Mamoru Miyano's Light voice. The way he goes from calm to absolute crazy in the same sentence. I went back to the dub later and it sounded weird and flat. You're a convert now man. The sub just hits different with the raw emotion.

You ever try watching an anime you loved dubbed in a totally different language? I did that with Cowboy Bebop and it messed with my head for a whole season before I got used to it.

But dont you think the dub cast brought their own thing to those roles that made them memorable in the first place? Ive seen people watch sub only and miss out on how well the english voice actors captured Light's arrogance in a different way. @wilson.olivia had a point about switching languages messing with your head, but to me that just shows both versions have solid performances worth getting used to.
