Tried watching dub for the first time and got totally thrown off

I've been a sub only watcher for like 5 years now. Last week I put on the dubbed version of my favorite show and the voices just didn't match the characters at all in my head. It felt like I was watching a completely different anime with how the emotions landed differently. Has anyone else tried switching formats and had it ruin the vibe for them?

Dub actors actually do a ton of great work, but bad direction messes it up.
