Vent: found out the original Gundam was almost canceled after 39 episodes and it bugs me
I was reading an old interview with Yoshiyuki Tomino from around 1981 and he said the first Gundam series got its episode order cut from 52 down to 39 because toy sales were soft early on. That number stuck in my head all day, since the show basically built the whole real robot genre and it was almost nipped in the bud. Now every time I rewatch the early episodes I keep thinking about what got left on the cutting room floor. Does anyone know if there's a solid source on what the last 13 episodes were supposed to cover?
Which interview was that, the one in the old OUT magazine or a different one...? I keep seeing the 39 episode number tossed around but nobody ever says where the cut order came from, and it would be nice to actually see the source instead of secondhand quotes. As for the missing 13, I remember reading that Tomino had ideas for the crew getting to space earlier and a bigger push toward the Zeon home front, but I could be mixing that up with the novel version. Has anyone actually dug up a production doc or a Tomino memo that lays out the plan, or is it all just fans piecing it together from later interviews...? Because at this point the "what could have been" talk feels like it floats around with nothing solid under it.
