Why I think the 'emotional weight' debate misses the real point of Gurren Lagann

Last month I joined a rewatch thread on a Discord server in Denver, and everyone was praising the show for its themes about growing up and letting go, which I never got from it. I grew up watching this in 2008 on a bootleg DVD from a swap meet, and to me it was always a pure spectacle about momentum and refusing to stop, not some deep metaphor. Am I the only one who enjoys it for the flash and hype rather than the supposed layered storytelling?

You ever notice how people see totally different shows depending on when they watch it? My buddy Mike watched Gurren Lagann for the first time last year, right after his dad passed, and he bawled his eyes out at the part where Simon lets Nia go. I watched it the same week on a laptop with a cracked screen and just wanted to see drill fights get bigger, so I get where you're coming from completely.
