A guy in his 70s watched me pull a dent with a stud welder and called it cheating
Was working a rear quarter on a Camry at the shop off Route 9 in Jersey and this older fella, retired body man, was visiting his nephew next door and wandered over. He watched me glue-pull a dent in about 20 minutes and just shook his head, saying back when he started in Newark in 1968 you'd spend two hours with a torch and a hammer and still see it in the paint. Told me his first shop didn't even have a MIG, you brazed patch panels and smoothed it with lead, and you learned to read the metal or you starved. I laughed but it stuck with me, because I can't tell you the last time I picked up a shrinking hammer instead of reaching for the stud gun. Any of you old timers still keep the torch around for the stuff the welder can't fix, or did you make peace with the new way?
