Got a thank you note from a kid after fixing his dad's old truck

Finished a big job on a 1987 Ford F-150 for a guy last month, a real rust bucket from upstate. His son, maybe 10, came by to see it when we were done. He handed me a folded piece of paper that just said 'Thanks for making my dad smile again' in crayon. That one stuck with me more than any payment. You ever get a small thank you that just made the whole grind feel worth it?

Got me right in the feels. That's not a small thank you, that's the whole point of the job. Fixing the truck was just the work, but fixing the family moment is what we're actually here for. Money comes and goes, but that kid seeing his dad happy is what you actually get paid in.

Read a story about a mechanic who kept an old truck running for a dad just to keep his carpool tradition with his daughter. That's the real work right there.

Man, I tried to do that once. Fixed my neighbor's lawnmower so he could keep his Saturday morning routine with his kid. Took me three weekends and I accidentally put the carburetor on backwards the first time. He still got his time with his son, but I'm pretty sure I left a screwdriver in the engine block.
