Had a weird moment with a customer's old Ford pickup last month

I was fixing a dent on a 1992 F-150's bedside in my shop in Tacoma. The owner told me his dad bought it new, and he wanted it perfect. While I was working, I found a faded receipt from a gas station in the door panel from 1995. It hit me that I'm not just fixing metal, I'm holding onto someone's whole story. Anyone else find little bits of history in a car they're working on?

Seriously? It's not just a receipt. That's a time capsule. I found a kid's drawing under a seat once, signed with a crayon name. Found a pay stub from a factory that shut down twenty years ago in a glove box. You pull that stuff out and you're touching proof that a real life happened in that car. It matters.

You ever think about how many stories are lost because we just toss stuff like that? That pay stub wasn't just paper, it was someone's whole week, their bills, their life. We're surrounded by proof of other people but we're trained to see it as trash. Makes you wonder what of ours will end up as someone else's little mystery someday.

Sounds a bit dramatic. It's just an old receipt.
