Hot take: spray out booths have changed a lot in 5 years and nobody talks about it
I was going through some old photos on my phone from when I first started doing paint work at my dad's garage in Tucson, and the difference in finish quality between then and now is kind of wild. Five or six years ago we were still using a old downdraft booth with filters that we changed maybe every 40 hours if we remembered, and orange peel was just something you accepted on certain colors. Last month I sprayed a tri-coat white on a 2022 Tahoe and it laid down so flat out of the gun I barely had to touch it. Part of it is the new HVLP guns with the digital regulators, part of it is the booth we put in back in 2022 that keeps temp and airflow way steadier. But honestly the biggest change for me was switching to a moisture trap setup that actually works, we used to get fisheyes maybe once a month and now it's almost never. The old timers at the supply house on 22nd Street told me I was wasting money on the new gear, then one of them came by and watched me spray a bumper and went quiet. Curious if anyone else has seen their redo rate drop just from airflow and moisture control alone, or is it mostly the materials getting better?
