I Was Laying Clear Coat Way Too Thick For 4 Years, A $12 Gauge Finally Tipped Me Off
Our shop in Bakersfield has a cheap old gun that I used forever, and I always figured thicker clear meant better shine. Last March I sprayed a 2016 Civic bumper and got 3 runs plus a nasty sag near the wheel arch that took me two hours to wet sand out. A buddy who does resto work handed me a dry film gauge he grabbed online for like $12 and told me to check my last panel. My clear was reading around 5 mils when it should be closer to 2, which explained why I kept fighting orange peel and solvent pop on every job. I dropped my first coat to a light tack coat and slowed my passes down, and the flow came out way cleaner with half the buffing. Turns out I was also pushing my fan too wide and holding the gun too close, so the edges were drowning while the middle starved. Any of you switch to a gauge and find out your old "feel" for thickness was way off, or is it just me?

My dad's BBQ sauce, guitar strings, clear coat: feels right rarely is right once you measure.
