Old timer at the parts counter said don't bother blocking a plastic bumper, hit it with heat first

I laughed at him at the time, but I tried his way on a cracked Camry cover last Tuesday and it laid down way straighter than my usual grind and fill routine. Now I'm second guessing every bumper I've ever blocked dry. Any of you heat first or am I late to this?
